How does magnetic paint work?

Magnetic paint consists of regular paint but also contains many small iron particles. Iron is a ferromagnetic material, which means it attracts magnets. These iron particles are spread across the wall as you paint. Thanks to several coats of magnetic paint, the number of iron particles on the wall increases and magnets will adhere better.

How strong is magnetic paint?

Magnetic paint reveals its strength mainly after several coats of paint as there will be more iron particles that are more evenly spread across the wall. With three coats of paint, you can already attach up to four sheets of A4 paper with strong office magnets.

Painting with magnetic paint

Magnetic paint can be applied to any smooth surface. If you like, you can paint over the magnetic wall paint with acrylic paint or any other product of your choice.

Prepare the selected surface the same way as you would for regular wall or emulsion paint. Stir the magnetic wall paint properly so the iron particles will be evenly distributed. Let each coat of the magnetic wall paint dry for 4 hours before applying the next coat. You should wait 6 hours before applying a finishing coat of regular wall paint. If you plan to paint over with chalkboard or whiteboard paint, you should even wait 2 weeks to prevent uneven textures.

Design options with magnetic wall paint

Rectangular, round, L-shaped or wavy: You can apply the magnetic paint any way you want. Just tape off your chosen area on the wall, paint it with magnetic and then with white paint. Now you can discreetly hang photos, pictures or postcards. You can expand your design possibilities by purchasing our chalkboard paint or whiteboard paint. These products can also be used to change the colour scheme.

Possible uses of magnetic paint

In the kitchen: Paint your chosen surface with magnetic paint and apply emulsion, chalkboard, or whiteboard paint after drying. These special communication areas provide your family with opportunities to note or hang up different things, such as shopping lists, dates for birthdays and meetings, recipes, kind messages, etc.

On room doors: If your walls have already been painted with magnetic wall paint, then room doors lend themselves to be transformed into large surfaces for magnets as well. First, paint either one or both sides of the door with magnetic paint. After it has dried, paint over the grey paint with white dispersion paint. Now your door has turned into a photo wall and is ready to receive photos or nametags. In the children's room: Children can use the magnetic wall to attach their artwork, posters and photos, for example. The wall can be redecorated again and again to your heart’s content.

At the kindergarten and school: The concept is the same as for the use in the children’s room. The advantage of magnetic paint is that you can easily turn underutilised surfaces into useful blackboards, which can be of great benefit, especially in smaller classrooms.

In the office: For brainstorming or creative processes, apply whiteboard paint on top of magnetic wall paint. Use this versatile surface to keep notes, record tasks, appointments etc. and simultaneously attach documents with magnets.

Magnets for use on magnetic paint

Not every magnet adheres well to magnet paint and common ferrite magnets are too weak for this purpose. A perfect choice are strong neodymium magnets such as cube magnets, disc magnets or cone magnets as well as magnetic sheets and magnetic tapes. Important to know: For magnetic paint to provide the best possible surface for magnets, we recommend three to four coats of paint because, compared to sheet metal, magnetic paint contains less iron per cm². Each additional coat adds more iron powder to the wall and the magnets will adhere better. However, the painted surface will never reach the same adhesive force as sheet metal.
